Wine Decanters
A wine decanter's purpose is very simple but their results are overwhelming. Pouring wine slowly from the bottle into the decanter allows young wine to 'breathe' - meaning the wine comes into contact with oxygen for a period of time. This softens the harsh tannins of young wines, enhances and releases the aromas and generally makes the wine much more pleasant.
However wine decanters are predominantly used to separate the wine from any sediment in the bottle caused as a result of ageing or in more full bodied reds (such as Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot). Sediment will do you no harm but is not very tasty! Once decanted it is easy to pour off the wine and leave the sediment behind. Or use a wine filter to further filter the sediment.
Decanters are beautiful to look at allowing you to appreciate the rich colours of the wine. Just pour slowly, tipping the bottle not more than 90 degrees to the decanter, allow to settle, pour into a large crystal glass and sip sip sip away...
