Although South Africa may seem an unlikely place for wine production, South African Wines benefit from a latitude similar to that of Chile and Australia and a Mediterranean climate ideal for growing wonderful grapes.
Reds and whites thrive in South Africa’s growing region, including Chenin Blanc, which is known locally as Steen, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Pintonage. South African white wines are more popular but the reds are beginning to catch up.
South African wines offer wine lovers a consistent product with a few surprises here and there and recent inroads made in technology and sustainability should continue to propel South African wines forward in the world market.
